Randy Cooper is represented in fine galleries in many countries, including France, Israel, Sweden and Canada. His Shadow Sculpture have a prominent place in galleries from coast to coast. The detail of his torsos, with their drawing quality shadows, have delighted and enamored gallery patrons for years.
On a windy cold late winter day in Santa Fe while waiting for a friend in a modern gallery, Randy was entranced by the shapes and colors of the abstract work on display. Back in his studio near the end of a long day, Randy found a small rectangular piece of mesh. Not having a finished sculpture in mind, he started with a single shape and started creating an abstracted sculpture. The shape evolved and the wire wanted more, so a new shape was added, and Randy found himself in a creative zone, as his sense of time disappeared. Dinner time came and went, but it did not matter! Abstraction was completed a few days later, after much refining and attending to the detail that characterizes Randy’s work. Then Randy had to make decisions about the color, a real challenge for a sculptor. Coloring and re-coloring the elements took Randy down new paths, even leading him to take an airbrushing course.
Randy has created a new art form, combining his wire mesh and his shadow abstraction and color. He is a master sculptor in creating the human form, and now he has taken his passion for creating beauty another step or rather a step in a different direction.
Randy said, “The human form will always be my passion, but the continuous flow of the abstracts gives me a freedom I’ve not experienced before and the color adds a dimension that is new and exciting. Besides it is fun!!”
